Is COVID-19 Pandemic Making Us Appreciate Independent Businesses?

COVID-19 has certainly had a huge impact on our lives but there could be some real positives to come out of this bleak situation.

Beverley, like the rest of the country, is on lockdown, and as a result of this is having to adapt. While many businesses have been forced to close some adjusted to continue some level of trading.

The Queens Head in Beverley is one example. Since they were forced to close they have been operating a food delivery service.

Local shops have also been changing how they do business during this crisis. One such business is Molescroft Wines. Since the lockdown they almost reinvented themselves.

No longer do they just sell booze, tobacco and confectionery. They now also have a huge selection of fresh goods and household essentials.

They have taken one step further and are putting together fruit and also vegetable boxes. In the past few days, they have again increased their offering, adding meat to their ever-growing inventory.

Some of the items we may find difficult to find, like tin tomatoes and flour are easily found in this local independent business.

Could COVID-19 Help Save Our High Street

What is becoming clearer by the day is where possible people really are backing their local businesses. Indeed, in our household, we try where possible now to buy what we can from Molescroft Wines.

As a result of this change to our shopping habits, we are able to restrict the number of times we visit busier supermarkets.

For many years there has been a real push for people to do what they can to support their high street.

In these dark times, it seems that that is just naturally happening. While some business struggle others are finding new opportunity while serving their community.

There is no question that the buying local is benefiting from the COVID-19 Pandemic. What’s more we as people are seeing those benefits too in our pockets and amount of food waste.

As we come out of the crisis we could look back and reflect on how an awful situation helped save our high streets.
