Beverley RUFC U18’s Colts returned to action this weekend with their first game since February 2020 due to the Covid pandemic with a difficult away fixture against Scunthorpe.

With Beverley receiving from the KO it was clear that Scunthorpe were looking to attack the Beverley line and had the lions share of possession in the first encounters.

However, Beverley’s defence was strong and they worked very well as a team, midway through the half though Sheffield were awarded a penalty and they choose to take the 3 points and the lead in the game.

There was some excellent tackling throughout the game with stand-out defensive performances by Dylan Ross, Ben Wilkinson, and Zsolt Pataky-Snell.

As the teams battled Beverley took their game up another level and a fluid well-rehearsed backs move allowed Tom Barnard to slice through the home team’s defensive line and score, Harry Gunn-Mclean converted.

After a fairly brutal first half, it was inevitable that the game would open up, first a delicate grubber kick from Eden Quantoch allowed Harry Gunn-Mclean to score in the corner which he duly converted before the forwards put pressure onto Scunthorpe and allowing Ben Walker to drive over the line, converted by Gunn-Mclean.

The referee did get a little frustrated with the Beverley team and sin-binned Quantock for a number of penalties as the home team attacked the Beverley line and inevitably managed to score a converted try.

This galvanised the Beverley team and another attacking play allowed Jacob Baggs to outpace a number of the opposition from the halfway line and score another exceptional try in the corner, Gunn-Mclean converted.

By this time the game was won and the Beverley forwards attacked and a number of penalties resulted in the referee awarding a penalty try on the stroke of full time.

An excellent return to rugby and result, the team will build on this performance for the next games against Sheffield and then another game against Scunthorpe both at Beaver Park over the next few weeks.

There are a number of work on’s especially in discipline with Beverley receiving 3 yellow cards in the game, but overall a very pleasing result.

Final Score: Scunthorpe 10 Beverley 35
