Hobby Boss makes a decent kit. This one of the USS Hopper in 1/700 was no exception. Quality-wise the plastic that the kit was made from was very good.

The scale is not that big. At 1/700 this model of the USS Hopper was certainly a big test for the eyes, while a steady hand is needed too.

Building the model presents very few issues. That said there are some awkward areas along both sides of the ship. This is not a big deal, but depending on how you paint your models it is worth noting these areas will need attention.

Along with the plastic, there are a number of parts that come on a photo-etch sheet.

Fitting these parts is another test in its self. They are small but need to be used to complete the kit. There is not a lot to paint.

The decks are dark grey while the ship is light grey. There are a few spots of black with a wash being used to pull out some detail. The decals were reasonable in their quality but quite tricky to apply.

Building Seascape For Hobby Boss USS Hopper DDG-70

Once complete a quick display base was made for the model. The chosen material was a block of wood. Following a bit of sanding, the wood was primed using Vajello’s black. The entire block was then painted dark blue. The model was then fixed to the base using ‘No Nails‘ this stuff works a treat.

The texture was applied to the block using basic gels. These dried clear and glossy enough to look like the sea. Finally, additional detail was added around the ship to show a bit of foam.

Model from Trumpeter. As kits go this is certainly one of the better ones. It has a very good fit. You build it up in modules. It’s a bit of a cross between making ships and tanks, the skirt is solid rubber.
