Guide Dogs for the Blind is currently recruiting puppy raisers in the Beverley. The charity which supports people with sight loss is hoping volunteers will come forward to help raise the puppies they are training.
An estimated 25 people in the UK start to lose their sight every day. With the charity getting just 1% of its funding from government sources, volunteer’s play a key role.
Linda Conway, Volunteering Coordinator at the charity said;
“We are currently recruiting puppy raisers in the Beverley area. Puppy raisers help raise our future Guide Dogs that make a difference to the lives of people living with sight loss.”
“Without our volunteer’s support, we could not do the work we do to support people living with sight loss.”
The charity says that undertaking a role like this is very rewarding. While they also say if you are a dog person this is the best volunteering role around.
Puppy Raiser Chris said;
“It’s so rewarding to know that the dog will go on to help people with sight loss gain independence and freedom.”
Puppy Raisers Will Be Given Full Support
Those who come forward will be given full training and support by the charity. While food is supplied and any vet bills covered. Volunteers will help develop the puppies by undertaking a range of tasks.
These include familiarising puppies with a wide range of environments such as shops. While you will also teach a puppy that is it OK to be alone.
Linda added;
“Volunteering for Guide Dogs should never leave you out of pocket. We’ll make sure we pay any expenses related to your volunteering with us in line with our policy.”
“We are working hard to make sure anyone who wants to can volunteer for Guide Dogs, but at the moment we have a minimum age of 18 for this role.”
