The Pasture Masters responsible for Beverley Westwood have recently planted trees in Newbegin Pits on the Westwood.

They have an ambitious tree-planting programme of which this is the start and there are plans to involve local schools and community groups to help form new plantations on the Beverley Commons.

Beverley Civic Society (BCS) has helped contribute to the cost of these new trees including their enclosures using a Community Tree Fund Grant from the ERYC.

The trees will be included in the 1300 Trees for Beverley and St John programme.

Of course, the money would go a lot further if it were just for trees, but as the pastures are grazed every summer, cattle proof enclosures are essential and indeed are the main cost. Timber for the fencing is more expensive than it used to be.

Planting trees has become an important issue recently, not only to absorb carbon emissions but also to enhance the landscape and encourage wildlife.

The Beverley Civic Society Tree Group was formed with the aim of enhancing Beverley’s landscape. To this effect the group decided to commemorate the death of St John of Beverley 1300 years ago by planting 1300 trees during the anniversary year of his death and the subsequent founding of Beverley.

Since then the ERYC has lined up with the Northern Forest Project aiming to plant trees across an area stretching from Liverpool to East Yorkshire. While the Queen has also expressed the desire that trees are planted to commemorate her Platinum Jubilee.
