Beverley Theatre Company (BTC) are pleased to announce that their Spring production will be the dark comedy ‘The Killing of Sister George’, by Frank Marcus.
This is our first production since November 2019 due to Covid and we are really looking forward to getting back on stage and entertaining the people of East Yorkshire.
Perhaps best known as the film production from the 1960s starring Beryl Reid as the eponymous ‘Sister George’, the play is a scathing examination of the public and private lives of so-called ‘cultural icons’.
‘Sister George’ is a beloved character on a popular BBC radio soap opera, a cheerful nurse who bicycles around the countryside singing hymns and doing good. In private life, June Buckridge, the actress who plays her, is a swaggering, foul-mouthed, alcoholic lesbian in a long term relationship with waifish Alice ‘Childie’ McNaught.
Due to low ratings, cut-backs and June’s own bad behaviour, the BBC decides to kill off Sister George on the series. A visit from Miss Mercy Croft, a no-nonsense network executive bearing the bad news sends June into meltdown, which results in Childie’s retreat to the arms of Mercy.
‘The Killing of Sister George’ is directed by Mike Edwards, a new face at BTC, but a most welcome one.
The production sees the return of stalwarts familiar from past productions. Sister George herself is played by Pamela Day, Childie by Zoe Conley, Mercy by Helen Wild and Madame Xenia by Kay Slater.
The play will be performed with kind permission from Concord Theatricals/Samuel French Ltd, at 7.30pm, from Wednesday 18th May until Saturday 21st May at the Beverley Memorial Hall, Lairgate, Beverley with a licensed bar (except Wednesday).
Tickets are priced at £9.50 for adults, £8.50 for concessions. Tickets can be purchased either:
