Tesco Beverley’s Community Food Connection scheme has received praise from The Cherry Tree Centre manager Jo Ramsay.
Currently, The Cherry Tree Centre helps feed over 180 people in the town each week. This is partly made possible as a result of the support offered by the Tesco store in Beverley.
Tesco Beverley’s Community Champion Dave Ryley explained more about how the company is helping tackle food poverty in the area, he said;
“We are pleased to be working with the Beverley Cherry Tree Community Centre, Long Riston Playgroup and Olio food sharing app & social enterprise in our Community Food Connection programme.”
“As part of our pledge to cut food waste, the scheme supports charities and community groups, enabling us to donate surplus unsold food items at the end of each day.”
“Since the scheme started in 2016, over 107,000 meals have been donated to these and other local community groups from our Beverley store.”
Cherry Tree Centre Manager Jo Ramsay said;
“I want to thank Tesco for the regular weekly food donations we receive.”
“The donations make such a difference to people and families that are struggling with food poverty.”
“We help over 180 people every week at the Cherry Tree Centre and we rely on the food donations to allow us to keep this vital service going.”
Community Food Connection Scheme Has Additional Capacity
Food poverty in the UK is rising fast. The Trussell Trust estimate that the use of food banks in the UK has increased by 123% in five years. Furthermore, these numbers are expected to increase with soaring energy prices and the increased cost of living.
Dave is urging other local groups who are helping fight food poverty to come forward. He added;
“We still have some nights available for other groups to also benefit from the scheme. Please contact Dave Ryley: 07871 572742 / beverley.community@tesco.com if you would like more information.”
