A survey finds that nearly one in 10 parents will use a food bank to feed their children within the next three months.

In other words, 1.3 million parents are expected to visit a food bank in the next three months as they struggle to cope with rising living costs, and 88% of parents reported an increase in their monthly food bill as well during this period.

In its research, the Trussell Trust conducted with the food delivery company Deliveroo, it also discovered that a third of parents skipped at least one meal due to other costs.

While 20% said they were unable to cook hot food because of the cost of using an oven at least once during the past three months.

Emma Revie, the chief executive of the Trussell Trust said:

“Everyone should be able to afford their own food, but as families face the biggest income squeeze in a generation, people are telling us they’re having to make impossible decisions between heating and eating and being forced to turn to food banks to feed themselves.”

Food poverty continues to grow as the cost of living coupled with soaring energy costs starts to hit home. Locally in Beverley, the Cherry Tree Centre recently said they are proving well over 100 meals a week to hungry families.

The charity recently praised Tesco for their Community Food Connection Scheme something they say has provided over 107,000 meals to struggling local families.

The same survey revealed that when asked how they had cut back on heating, 58% said they had cut back on household bills.

As we face the greatest cost-of-living crisis of our lifetimes, we are waking up to cold homes and empty stomachs across the country. This has helped to heighten the anxiety of those facing this crisis.

Last week, numerous analysts predicted that energy bills would remain well over £2,000 for two more years.
