May marks the return of East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s free compost giveaways.

The area will host eight giveaway events between Monday 9 May and Saturday 21 May, during which around 5,000 bags of compost will be distributed for free to local residents.

Participants are invited to drive to their nearest event, where they will receive two 15kg bags of compost in their car boots.

As always, East Riding residents will recycle their garden and food waste in their brown bins to make the compost being given away.

The scheme has been operating for several years and returned after a Covid break in September.

It is important that residents remain in their vehicles during all events, which will be Covid-safe.

In Beverley, residents will be able to pick up free compost from the council depot on Saturday 21 May. The depot is located on Annie Reed Road, off Grovehill Road, and the compost will be given out to residents free of charge.

Free Compost Is A Thank You To Residents For Recycling

Chris Matthews is the council’s portfolio holder for climate change and the environment. Commenting on the compost giveaway he said;

“Compost giveaways are really important because they are the council’s way of giving back to residents and thanking them for continuing to recycle.

“The East Riding is still one of the top areas in the country for recycling and that’s down to the fantastic efforts of residents.”

All kinds of organic waste can be recycled in brown bins, including grass cuttings, hedge trimmings, small branches, leaves, flowers, weeds, peelings, plate scrapings, bones, bread, meat, eggshells, and small quantities of soup, sauces, and gravy.

It is requested that residents do not queue up at the venues in advance, as this may result in them being turned away for safety reasons.
