East Riding of Yorkshire Council is encouraging residents to learn what it means to be a foster carer during Foster Care Fortnight.

More people are urgently needed in the East Riding and Hull to help care for children and especially teenagers.

An event in Beverley will be held on 14 May at Toll Gavel Church. Here you can learn what it takes to be a foster carer.

Being a foster parent is one of the most rewarding roles you can take on. Because we have all been teenagers, we understand how difficult and exciting life can be at this age.

Foster teens are at an age when they can benefit greatly from the guidance they receive. You might be surprised at how quickly you can see a difference if you influence them in life.

Foster carers in the East Riding are offered excellent support services. All members of the household will receive free gym membership and classes at East Riding Leisure centres; comprehensive training and access to qualifications; a generous allowance and loyalty payment; practical, emotional, and social support; and free events exclusively for the council’s foster carers.

Providing a child with stability, support, and a safe and loving environment can make a real difference in their life, enabling them to thrive and enjoy childhood.

You don’t need formal qualifications to be a foster carer, nor do you need to live in the East Riding, own your own home, or have children.

It requires a spare room and commitment to meet the needs of a child who needs help, care, and support at a difficult time in their lives.

A spokesperson for the council said;

“Foster carers and their families are exceptional people.”

“If you have the desire to help and can give the time, energy and commitment, I would strongly recommend you come along to one of the council’s drop-in events so you can have a chat with the team and find out how you can become involved in the much-needed and highly valued role as a foster carer for East Riding children.”

“On offer are an excellent support package and excellent training opportunities.”
