Bridlington Will Host A New Crab Chase Event In September

Children under 16 will be able to participate in the first-ever Bridlington Crab Chase. It is set to take place on Sunday, 18 September, in Bridlington’s Harbour at Crane Wharf.

East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s Coastal Services team has organised this new and exciting event. They have done so with the support of Bridlington Quay Townscape Heritage.

In what is hoped will become an annual event, the competition will highlight the harbour’s shellfishing heritage, as well as introduce youngsters to the wonders of the ocean.

An adult must accompany children to one of four heats, where they will try to catch as many crabs in 45 minutes as possible.

Trophies will be awarded to the winners of each heat, as well as an overall trophy winner. Also, winners will get a family ticket to the ‘Sleeping Beauty’ pantomime at Bridlington Spa a rod and reel.

After the results have been announced, all competitors will receive a medal and certificate. This will be presented at Bridlington Spa later that day.

Crab Chase Event Will Allow People To Explore Heritage Of Harbour

Andrew Uttley, townscape heritage officer, said;

“We are delighted to support this new event, along with the National Lottery Heritage Fund. It provides such an opportunity to children and their families to engage with something the town is so famous for whilst also allowing them to explore the heritage of the harbour and the wider areas.”

There will be 20 competitors in each heat, grouped by age, under 10 and under 16.

Competitors will bring their crabs to marshals. They will record their haul on entry cards and place them in a central bucket to be released later.

Each competitor will receive a crab net to use on the day. They can also keep the net for future crab fishing adventures.

Despite the requirement to use only the provided net, competitors are free to source and provide their own bait to have the best chance of winning.
