Here’s How You Can Get Free Compost At September Giveaways

The second round of free compost giveaways will be held by the East Riding of Yorkshire Council in September.

Approximately 5,000 bags of compost will be given away for free between September 6 and 22 at nine giveaway events across the area.

To participate, residents should drive to their nearest event and pick up two 15kg compost bags. These events follow nine successful events in May that residents enthusiastically supported.

East Riding residents recycle garden waste and food waste every year in brown bins, resulting in compost that will be given away again this year.

In addition to grass cuttings, hedge trimmings, small branches, leaves, flowers, and weeds, brown bins also accept peelings, plate scrapings, bones, bread, meat, eggshells, and small amounts of soup, sauce, and gravy.

Compost from Willerby’s Biowise plant – where the giveaway compost is sourced – is recycled into brown bin content.

Councillor Chris Matthews, the council’s portfolio holder for environment and climate change, said:

“The giveaways we held in May were a big success, so we’re hoping this second round will be just as popular with residents.

“We hold these events as our way of thanking the residents of the East Riding for their continued support of our recycling schemes.”

Free compost will be given away at the following events:

•Tuesday 6 September, 4.30pm – Preston, Holderness Academy and Sixth Form College, Station Road, HU12 8UZ

•Thursday 22 September, 4pm – Driffield, Driffield Showground, Kelleythorpe, YO25 9DN.

In order to ensure the safety of residents, residents are also being asked not to queue at the venues beforehand. Using compost to improve soil is the best use for it.
