World First Aid Day : Young People Being Urged To Learn first Aid Skills

As part of the Centenary of Youth celebrations for World First Aid Day, St John Ambulance is holding an event in Anlaby on 10 September.

There will be fun activities for both children and adults at the Men in Sheds building, First Lane, Anlaby from 12-5pm, including face painting, bouncy castles, CPR demonstrations, refreshments, and award-winning cakes.

In addition to celebrating 100 years of volunteer work by young people, the event will also promote youth programmes available to the public.

One in four people have saved a life, but only 14% of those in Yorkshire and the Humber have high levels of confidence in first aid.

On World First Aid Day, St John Ambulance is calling on people to learn and renew basic first aid skills that can save lives.

St John Ambulance’s District Manager (North East Region), Daryl Perkins MBE, said:

“This event will highlight the importance of first aid as well as demonstrate the fantastic work our young people do to help people around them.

“There will be lots of fun activities on the day for families to enjoy, but most of all, on World First Aid Day it’s an educational day out where you can watch CPR simulations to find out how to save a life.

“We are always on the lookout for volunteers, and this doesn’t have to be in a clinical role if anyone is squeamish.”

“As well as the first aider and volunteer vaccinator roles, we have opportunities in fundraising, logistics, administration and much more, all of which can be found on our website.”

“We also have youth units across the Humber and East Riding district and are looking for youth helpers/leaders to support these young people in their activities.”

World First Aid Day Will Be Used To Try And Encourage More Young People To Gain Skills

“I’d urge anyone who is looking to volunteer to choose St John Ambulance and join an organisation that really does change people’s lives.”

The survey was conducted to coincide with St John Ambulance’s Ask Me campaign, which highlights the work the organization does to help members of the public gain the skills to save lives.

Among those surveyed in Yorkshire and the Humber, just 13% said they were very confident in first aid. The overall figure was 29% – something St John Ambulance wants to improve.

Youth programs at St. John’s Ambulance are designed to help young people develop first aid skills, confidence, and leadership skills.

As part of the survey, people also were asked what first aid skills they wanted to learn – heart attacks and choking were the two health threats they wanted to learn how to treat, while 20% wanted to know how to treat knife wounds.
