Beverley Westwood Lions have regretfully had to call off their annual bonfire and fireworks event set to take place in Beverley, East Yorkshire.
The group made up of volunteers says that health and safety measures played a key role in reaching their decision.
They also add that while it has been cancelled they are wanting to ensure the signature event remains a permanent fixture in the town.
Duncan Jack from the Beverley Westwood Lions said:
“Unless we are 100% confident that all health and safety measures are in place it was the only course of action we could take.”
“It is a great shame for this year, but now is the time for next year to be looked at with a total review of the event.”
“The Club feel it is now beyond them and would look to other groups or individuals to step up to the plate and start preparing for next year if that is what people want.”
Thousands of people attend the event which is held on the Pastures surrounding Beverley. Popular with families it draws in people not only from the town but the wider community.
Beverley Westwood Lions Want To Ensure Event Has A Future
Mr Jack hopes the community will step up and offer their help to ensure the event has a future. He stressed that this is by no means the end but instead should be viewed as a new beginning.
He added:
“While is sad to have to call it off this year we certainly want to make sure it happens next year. To do that we want to hear from people and start planning for next year.”
“There is a good pot of money in the Clubs reserves to help things happen.”
“We would welcome hearing from those who are interested. I would like to urge them to in touch and we can look at getting together to make it happen.”
