A Market Weighton grief charity is celebrating after its founder won the regional final of a BBC Radio competition.

Talking about Loss’s founder, Jacqueline Gunn was presented with the ‘Together’ award at an afternoon tea and awards ceremony to celebrate the BBC’s ‘Make a Difference’ awards that recognise remarkable people and celebrates their achievements and contributions to lives in their communities.

This award recognizes individuals or groups that break down barriers and bring together people from different walks of life for a common cause.

It is one of eight awards, including Community Group, Fundraiser, Great Neighbor and Volunteer. For setting up Talking about Loss to ease isolation and fear surrounding death, Mrs Gunn won the award.

An ecstatic Mrs Gunn said: “What an incredible night! It was an absolute honour and a privilege to be in Hull Minster with all these amazing people making a real difference to our communities. Thank you.”

BBC England’s Head of Audio and Digital, Chris Burns, said: “The last two years have been challenging for everyone. Listeners have contacted us to share the stories of how people have helped each other, and we wanted to find a way of celebrating those unsung heroes and telling those amazing stories.”

Jacqueline Gunn founded Talking about Loss in 2019 as a meet-up group for like-minded people to talk freely about loss in a warm, friendly and supportive environment.

The National Lottery has recently awarded Talking about Loss £10,000 for its work.

As well as activities, men’s groups, and regular ‘cuppa and chat’ sessions, the group now organizes pop-up events throughout Yorkshire.
