Police in Humberside is participating in a week of action designed to support businesses and retailers and reduce business crime.

Retail workers across the UK are victimized by violence and abuse every day just for doing what they do.

They say that business and retail crime can have a detrimental effect on key workers and communities.

It is part of a week-long campaign to bring awareness to business crime in towns and city centres across the UK.

As part of this week of action, they will launch a Retail Crime Charter, aimed at reducing violence and abuse in retail settings.

Superintendent Paul French said:

“My colleagues will be out and about, engaging with businesses and retailers and encouraging them to sign up to the charter to demonstrate our collective commitment to tackling retail crime and to keep retail key workers safe.

“Officers and staff will be conducting high-visibility and plain clothes patrols to target those causing the greatest impact, whilst also helping businesses and retailers understand the range of support available to them to help keep their premises and staff safe.

“The week of action is a great opportunity to bring police, partners and our communities together to tackle the key issues which are impacting businesses and retailers.

“Our Neighbourhood Policing Teams will also be out offering wider crime prevention support, including registering people for our My Community Alert system.

“Whilst retail crime is a year-round focus, as we get closer towards the festive period, we want to be clear to those intent on committing a crime against our local businesses and retailers. This offending will not be tolerated, and we will be proactive to hold those responsible to account and keep our shop workers safe.

“Such key workers provide a key service at the heart of our communities and should be able to go to work without the fear of abuse or violence.”

It is possible to report crimes against local businesses and retailers – including the disposal of stolen goods – to 101, to your Neighbourhood Policing Team, or to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 anonymously if you have any information about those involved.
