The Treasure House In Beverley Hosts ‘Archaeology Up Close’

In support of the new archaeology exhibition at the Treasure House, Treasure!  Hidden Hoards and Fabulous Finds, an event at the Treasure House, will be held on Friday, 28 October from 11am to 3pm.

People who love archaeology can visit Archaeology Up Close to learn more about finds in this region.

In addition to managing over 1,500,000 pieces of archaeology, Finds Liaison Officers from the Portable Antiquities Scheme will speak about their work.

Sally Hayes, Treasure House curator, said:

“If you have small archaeological finds, why not bring them along to the event?  East Riding Museums will be sharing unusual archaeology and some of the hundreds of coins in the collection – can you match the heads, tails and dates in our coins quiz?”

Booking is not required for the event, which is suitable for all ages.

The exhibition, Treasure!  Hidden Hoards and Fabulous Finds, runs until 4 February, 2023.

There are thousands of treasured items in the Treasure House, but there are a few that are literally treasure. It explores this fascinating aspect of archaeology by showcasing objects that are defined as treasure under the Treasure Act 1996.

You can discover Viking gold rings, a pendant with Roman mosaics, and an Anglo-Saxon gold pommel (part of a sword handle) at the exhibition.

Some of the finds are more unusual, such as a bunch of 13th century silver coins fused together near Huggate, and Bronze Age metalworking waste near Bishop Burton. Metal offcuts can sometimes be considered treasure under the Treasure Act 1996.
