New analysis from the Liberal Democrats shows 515 businesses in the East Riding of Yorkshire will see their energy bills jump by £ 2,237,000 once Government support is cut in April.

As a result of the analysis, it is estimated that businesses will face an average bill increase of £4,343.  Experts in the Pub sector say many are paying more for their energy than they do in rent.

It is estimated that 515 pubs, restaurants, and cafes are at risk of facing an increase in energy bills by thousands of pounds in East Riding of Yorkshire Council area.

Since April, the Government will no longer cap the cost of business energy, instead paying a small proportion of businesses’ increased costs. There will be a 90% reduction in government aid to many pubs, cafes, and restaurants as a result of the change.

Liberal Democrats want the government to rethink its policies. Ministers need to listen to businesses about the risks they’re facing before withdrawing support. Businesses across the country are worried about the cliff edge they’re facing this year.

Commenting East Riding Council Lib Dem Council Group Leader Cllr David Nolan said:

“Countless businesses in our area are facing a cliff edge this year. Our pubs, restaurants and cafes have endured so much already; people will be devastated to see any more harm to our local high streets and villages.”

“The Government needs to give businesses around here the support they need to endure this energy bill catastrophe.”

“Ministers in Westminster must not wait a moment more. Liberal Democrats are calling for them to intervene and think again about this change – if they don’t we could see thousands of businesses, including pubs, restaurants and cafes going bust.”

“This could rip the heart out of our communities. Here in the East Riding the Hospitality sector is an important part of our tourism offer, as well as being an important employer.”
