Beverley and East Yorkshire residents are urged to help support a national tidying campaign by picking up litter in their neighbourhoods.

March 17 to April 2 is the date of the Great British Spring Clean. Councillors from the East Riding of Yorkshire are supporting the campaign and encouraging people to get involved.

This is the nation’s largest mass-action environmental campaign, organised by Keep Britain Tidy. There is a slogan on it that says, “One Bag, Big Difference”.

In support of the spring clean, the council will provide new eye-catching pink bin bags for free – and will pick up any bags filled.

Litter pickers can also be requested for spring cleans if necessary.

Participants from individuals, groups, and schools are encouraged to participate.

A councillor with responsibility for community empowerment and the voluntary sector, David Elvidge, said: “We want residents of all ages to get involved with the Great British Spring Clean by picking up litter where they live, work, or go to school.

“By doing even a little bit of cleaning, it can make a big difference to the community.”

Earlier this year, the council introduced its new pink bin bags in Stamford Bridge with a group of litter-pickers. A total of 200 bags filled with general waste and recyclables were collected on the group’s cleaning days last year.

Councillor Chris Matthews, the portfolio holder for environment and climate change, said: “The new pink bags the council is offering to give out are designed to let people know what a clear difference litter-pickers are making to their communities.

“They are also easily identified by our waste collection staff.”

“The council has specialist street cleaning staff out working every day, but we need volunteers to tidy areas they can’t.”

Contact refuseadmin@eastriding.gov.uk to request new bags, and equipment, and arrange waste collection if you are taking part in the Great British Spring Clean – or litter picking at any other time of year.
