Beverley’s Treasure House is hosting a free exhibition on the 1970s called ‘Glam and Gloom – 1970s Britain’ for visitors who want to escape the 21st century. The exhibit will be on display until Saturday, 26 August.

This exhibition’s title refers to glam rock bands, sunshine holidays, and great British TV shows of the decade.

There will be 70s LP covers including T Rex, Ziggy Stardust, and Bay City Rollers in tartan!  A variety of 70s fashions are on display, including white platform boots (which Abba popularized), Laura Ashley prairie dresses and knitted hotpants (perfect for 1976!).

The exhibition includes 70s toys such as space hoppers and battleships, as well as a serious game “Sum-It” (Britain went decimal in 1971).

Additionally, East Riding Archives is displaying a selection of documents from the 1970s. Among them are a guide from the Campaign for Real Ale on where to buy beer, a souvenir folder containing items related to the Yorkshire Television adaptation of Winifred Holtby’s South Riding, and a brochure for the Red Arrows flying display at RAF Leconfield.

For younger visitors, there is a collection of vintage and reproduction favourite 70s toys, as well as a film showing a drive down Beverley’s Toll Gavel in the early 70s before it was pedestrianised.

Councillor Nick Coultish, portfolio holder for culture, leisure and tourism, said : “This is a great nostalgic exhibition, evoking all kinds of memories from a remarkable decade. Pop into the Treasure House to see it, and be transported back 50 years!”

The Exhibitours’ exhibition ‘Glam and Gloom’ is on display at the Treasure House in Champney Road, Beverley. Free admission is available six days a week.
