East Riding residents are encouraged to take advantage of Alcohol Awareness Week by reducing their consumption of alcohol.
Alcohol and cost are the topics of this year’s national week, which runs from 3-9 July.
As alcohol costs rise, so does the cost of living, but drinking can affect more than just your bank account. A person’s well-being can be negatively affected by drinking alcohol for relaxation over time.
Every year, millions of people suffer from health problems, financial problems, relationship breakdowns, and family problems due to the harm caused by alcohol. The average person spends tens of thousands of pounds on alcohol over their lifetime.
Councillor David Tucker, portfolio holder for adults, health and care said: “This alcohol awareness week is an opportunity for people to consider the benefits financially, and physically and mentally, of reducing the amount of alcohol they consume.
“Prevention of longer-term health problems is better than cure and there are support services and advice that people in the East Riding can access to support them along the way. I’d encourage anyone concerned about their alcohol consumption to consider taking steps towards a positive change.”
In addition to improving sleep, mood, memory, and concentration, reducing alcohol consumption will also improve physical health.
It is recommended that you limit your alcohol intake to 14 units or less a week and that you spread your drinking evenly over three or more days. You should plan ahead when drinking alcohol and limit how many units you consume. You’ll be able to process alcohol more efficiently if you drink water and eat a filling meal between alcoholic drinks. Reducing intake will also be easier if you switch to lower alcohol percentages.
You can find online tools at NHS One You to monitor your drinking habits and find out how many units are in different drinks.
