The Queens Head has won a top accolade at the East Riding Best Bar None award’s night held at Beverley Racecourse.

The Queens Head Pub in Wednesday Market, Beverley was named as the best Independent Pub in East Riding of Yorkshire, an award the owners say shows they are a responsible place to eat and drink.

A family business, The Queens Head has been operated by the Willicombe’s for the past 12 years and employs six members of staff.

Speaking about the award the manager Claire Martin said;

“We have entered in previous years though never won anything before and were not expecting to win this time round so we were ecstatic to hear our name being called out.”

“It is excellent that as a standalone business we can compete against the big chain pubs that get lots of money throw at them as we only have a small budget in comparison.”

“Winning this award is not easy. We are visited by a member of the licencing team at the council who job it is to scrutinise how we run our public house.”

“Part of their role is to check everyone knows how to deal with current trends with both drinking and drug use and also asses how staff cope with such issues.”

“We hope that this award shows myself and the team at the Queens Head we will be recognised as a safe public house in the East Riding. It also shows we that our staff are professional and have good standard of working practices.”

It proved to be a good night for the business owners in Beverley at the awards night. The Cross Keys won Best Pub while East Riding Theatre won two awards while the Kings Head Beverley won the biggest prize of them all as was named the overall winner.

Mrs. Martin paid tribute to the other Beverley based licenced venues that won, she said;

“Everyone at the Queens Head would like to congratulate Kings Head, ERT and the Cross Keys on their success.”

“It speaks volumes about how well run the businesses are in Beverley that contribute to the towns night time economy by making venues safe and as compliant with the latest standards to ensure customer safety.”

  1. Never seems to have much choice in the real ale department. Usual stuff from the Nationals. No sign of micro brewery ales.Needs to learn lessons from the real ale pubs like Chequers and Goodmanham Arms.
