New hope for men with advanced prostate cancer

Dr. Daniel Diaz-Garcia, who was awarded his doctorate from the University of Nuevo Leon in Mexico, is currently visiting the research laboratory of Beverley cancer scientist Dr. Justin Sturge at The University of Hull.

Their collaborative research hopes to make further steps towards new treatments.

Dr. Diaz-Garcia explained: “We will be using new gene-editing technology to cut out genes from prostate cancer cells and work out how their aggressive behavior can be stopped.”

Dr. Sturge is researching new ways to diagnose and treat different types of cancer. He says: “This international collaboration was made possible by a recent Newton Fund development award at the University of Hull for which we are extremely grateful.”

In April 2016 Dr. Sturge’s research group won Educate North Research Team of the Year and he has collaborated with other scientific and clinical teams from Newcastle, Liverpool, London and Uruguay.

Dr Sturge says: “Building bridges with international experts is an exciting opportunity for innovative cancer research.”
