What a great day for Beverley RUFC. Beautiful weather and the Clubhouse packed to the rafters as they celebrated Ladies Day in aid of the Charity, Hull and East Riding Breast Friends.
All that was needed to make the day perfect was some good and exciting rugby and that requirement was certainly met.
West Leeds went ahead in the first minute following some sloppy handling by Beverley with a try in the corner by the Leeds right wing which was converted by the No 10 (0-7).
There followed a period of play where Beverley’s play was littered with mistakes. Poor passing and handling led to another inevitable Leeds score by the full back which again No 10 converted (0-14).
Beverley suddenly seemed to come alive and a marvellous break by scrum half Will Harrison
opened up the Leeds defence and Will Turnbull went over for a try which Phil Duboulay converted (7-14). Five minutes later the Beavers forwards set up a maul near the Leeds line and flanker Steve Wiggill touched down too far out for the conversion (12-14).
A penalty for Leeds to make the score 12-17 ended the first half.
The second half opened rather quietly and both sides were playing some exciting stuff but both defences were looking solid. Another penalty for Leeds saw them stretch the lead to 12-20 and then, shortly after that they went even further ahead with another try from their full back (12-25).
Not for the first time this season the Beavers showed their resilience and fighting spirit and they mounted a fight back, firstly with another try from Will Turnbull converted by Phil Duboulay (19-25), followed by a period of sustained pressure on the Leeds line leading to a fine try wide out by Jack Garvin (24 – 25).
The Beverley supporters held their breath as Phil Duboulay lined up the conversion attempt. He didn’t strike the ball as well as he would have liked but over it went to give the Beavers the lead for the first time (26-25).Talk about nerves of steel!!
Back came Leeds to try to breach the Beverley line but some fine tackling particularly from youngsters Jacob Holmes and Jack Garvin, both of whom made game saving tackles at the death, saw them home by 26 points to 25.
Final Score : Beverley RUFC 26 West Leeds 25
