Case For Relocating Police Station Isn’t Immediately Clear Says Cllr

Cllr Denis Healy who represents residents in the Beverley St Mary’s Ward says the case for relocating the police station is not immediately clear to him.

His comments come after the local Labour Party in Beverley put forward their idea to move the Police Station in Beverley from New Walk to the former site of St Nicholas School.

Speaking to HU17.net, Cllr Healy said;

“The case for relocating the police station isn’t immediately clear to me, and I would also want to hear the views of senior police officers.”

“I agree that the police need to operate from the heart of local communities, but the current police station is already in a community, and  its location is fairly convenient for both Beverley and Molescroft.”

“I think the people of St Mary’s ward would be concerned if they were to lose a police station which serves them and the whole community.”

Police and Crime Commissioner Keith Hunter met with members of his party, The Labour Party, in Beverley where he welcomed the idea of relocating the police station.

At the meeting he confirmed he would be raising the proposal with Humberside Police Estates and that the idea was ‘in line with his community based policing strategy.’

Beverley Labour’s George McManus speaking after the meeting said support was good for the idea, he said;

“We were delighted at the response.  Community Policing is the bedrock of our crime fighting strategy.”

“People’s lives are being blighted by anti social behaviour.  A visible police presence at the centre of the town could be key in fighting this.”

“The idea is already attracting a fantastic level of support from Beverley residents.”

Any move would see the site the current site on New Walk sold off.

This week Mr. Hunter received full support for his proposals to hit council tax payers with a full increase on the police supplement paid.
