In medieval times the pilgrims and sanctuary men left their marks on the walls of Beverley Minster as part of their worship to Saint John.

Crosses, swords, boats and music are there for the observant to discover.

Today we call it graffiti and these marks are now being celebrated thanks to a National Lottery Heritage Fund grant towards a £700,000 project to restore the Minster’s Lesser South Transept roof and tell the story of its fascinating medieval role in Sanctuary.

To help celebrate this role with modern urban graffiti – yarn bombing! Beverley Minster will be yarn bombing in the Minster Churchyard on Saturday 24 October for a display to run to Saturday 3 October.

The Learning and Engagement Officer for the Minster’s Sanctuary project Ali Bodley said;

“The Minster graffiti is fascinating and not many people know about it.”

“We are delighted to be able to share it through this yarn bombing event. We would love as many people as possible to get involved. Whether you are an expert knitter or just starting out with crochet and pompoms, join our yarn bombing campaign.”

Members of the community are being invited to knit, crochet, French knit and to make pompoms.

You can wrap tree trunks, dangle pompoms or envelop benches. Be bold, be brave, be creative.

Take some time out and find some sanctuary in this fun activity. Start preparing now and get your designs ready for the big yarn bombing event.
