Power of Poetry artwork from the Rugby League World Cup will be displayed in Beverley, East Yorkshire after this weekend’s doubleheader in Hull.
It will be displayed between 2pm and 10pm at Wednesday Market on Wednesday, 9 November 2022.
Artist and poet Robert Montgomery have collaborated with Emergency Exit Arts and eight leading poets to create four double-sided light poems based on the Rugby League World Cup strapline “The Power of Together”.
It was created by poets Malika Booker, Vicky Foster, Jackie Kay, Zaffar Kunial, Sinead Morrissey, Jacob Polley, Shane Rhodes, and Louise Wallwein.
In a statement, councillor Jane Evison, portfolio holder for economic growth, investment, and tourism at East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said:
“We’re looking forward to welcoming ‘The Power of Poetry’ to the East Riding, and I’m sure it’ll be a wonderful experience to see these Rugby League-inspired poems being hosted in Beverley
“I would encourage residents to come along, take a photo and experience these fantastic poems.”
From civic squares to stadiums to libraries to local Rugby League clubs, the poems are currently touring the North of England.
As part of the Rugby League World Cup Cultural Festival, the epic tour continues until November 19.
Rugby league’s dynamic nature, inclusivity, the sound of the stadium, and the joy of reuniting through sports post-lockdown are explored in the impressive new mobile poems.
The four poems were written by poets who had connections to at least one of the RLWC2021 host cities.
