The second round of Hull Maritime’s Community Grant Scheme has been launched.
Using a community group or freelancer to deliver the project, the scheme aims to engage residents in Hull’s maritime history.
There are three different themes available for the second round of grants: environment, well-being, and heritage. Successful groups and individuals will be awarded micro-grants of up to £500 and small grants of up to £2,000 for activities that engage our local communities.
Councillor Mike Ross, Leader of Hull City Council, said:
“The first round of projects was a great success and engagement with communities across the city.
“The council is encouraging organisations and freelancers to apply for a maritime community grant and join forces with Hull Maritime, the project transforming our maritime treasures.
“This grant scheme aims to connect and engage with local communities in a variety of creative ways and raise awareness of our maritime heritage at the same time.”
Grants totalling almost £8,000 were awarded to local projects in the first round, including an art eco project that used recycled litter from the river Hull to create a fish sculpture, as well as events and activities coordinated by The Hull Visual Choir, Beverley Barge Preservation Society, and Norland Crew.
In addition, the St Andrews Dock Heritage Park Action Group received a grant for the construction of three information boards to accompany the Lost Trawlermen’s Memorial on St Andrews Quay.
Eddie Piercy, Chair of Hull Merchant Navy Association, received funding to support a reunion trip to Scarborough, told Hull Maritime what it meant to receive a community grant, he said:
“Groups like ours provide a lifeline, especially for our elderly, isolated and most vulnerable members…the highlights were just seeing everyone enjoying the afternoon, the banter of people completely at ease and relaxed in familiar company, with an excellent buffet and entertainment provided.”
Applications are now open. Applications must be submitted by Friday, 6 January 2023.
