Parents and carers of Year 6 children in East Riding will find out in September which secondary school their children will attend.

A total of 3,584 applications were submitted to East Riding of Yorkshire Council, most of which were made online – an increase of 3.2% from last year – and 3,441 places were offered to students according to their first preference.

3,542 children have been assigned a place at one of the three schools named as their first, second or third choice, despite a small decrease of 0.4% from 2022.

However, the total number of East Riding children allocated their first preference increased by 154, and 181 more children have been allocated a place at one of the three schools they named as their first, second or third choice.

It is estimated that the number of applications made for East Riding resident children in this year group has increased by 5.8% compared with last year, and the number of applications has increased by 3.6% – this is a result of efforts to encourage on-time applications and minimise late applications.

Among the 42 children who were unable to get a place at any school they named as their preference, 28 were placed at their catchment area schools and 14 were placed at the nearest East Riding school with a space available.

Children living in the East Riding will attend schools in the East Riding (95%), with 86% attending their local catchment schools.

School places have been allocated to 222 children living in other local authority areas, down from 325 in 2022, with the largest number (157) coming from Hull.

Due to this year’s high primary to secondary school cohort, fewer places have been available for those living in other local authority areas.

As a result of a lower birth rate in future years, cohort sizes are expected to decline.

There are 190 East Riding residents attending schools outside their local authority areas. 102 are attending schools in Hull.

13 of the 18 East Riding secondary schools have filled all their available places; Beverley Grammar School; Beverley High School; Cottingham High School; Driffield School; Goole Academy; Headlands School; Hessle High School; Hornsea School and Language College; Howden School; South Hunsley School; Withernsea High School; Woldgate School and Wolfreton School.

Councillor Victoria Aitken, portfolio holder for children and young people’s education, health and wellbeing at East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said: “I am delighted once again, to see so many children being awarded places at their chosen school, despite more children needing places this year.

“Parents have clearly shown that they want their children to go to their local school and to be a part of their local community.”

Deborah Myers, director of children and young people education and schools at East Riding of Yorkshire Council, added: “It is excellent news that the vast majority of parents and carers have been able to access their first choice of secondary school for their children.

“I would like to thank parents and carers for their timely applications and for maximising the use of our online system.

“The schools in the East Riding achieve and maintain good standards of education which parents really value and appreciate.”
