Blue & Golds Show Heart in Tough Match at Leeds

Beverley ARLC Rich Shaw

As the scoreline suggests this game was mission impossible. The blue and golds travelled to Leeds last Saturday against a side which would certainly not be out of place in the Premier Division of the National Conference if they possessed the facilities to be there.

They were physically bigger and oused class and ability from one to thirteen boasting a number of ex professionals in their ranks. There was no shortage of effort and endeavour from the visitors but too often good attempts at defence resulted in offloads and the ball been quickly shipped across field which Beverley were continually scrambling in defence.

The hosts were 44-0 up by half time but the visitors managed to get marginally more possession and territory in the second half. They managed to get on the scoreboard with a coolly stroked over drop goal from Steve Jonson which is the only point a team has scored at the home of Queens this season! Jonson took the man of the match award with his non stops efforts to prize open a rock solid home defence standing out. But Gavin Proctor and Mike Brown also gave notable dogged performances.

Coach Rich Shaw commented;

” I’m proud of the way our boys put their bodies on the line today, we travelled there on a hiding to nothing and the majority of the local amateur rugby league scene was expecting us to forfeit the tie but we go away with our heads held high.”

This Saturday Beverley are away to Embassy- a side which dropped out of the Hull & District League a few years ago but have reforned their open age side. Kick off is 2pm at the Eastmount Community Centre.
