Braves Secure Victory in Sutton With Late Scores

The Beverley Braves under 9’s went to Shelley Avenue and scored eleven tries against Sutton Trust on a short pitch, but conceded nine on an amazing night when attack came before defence. Sutton Trust opened the scoring in their first set of six and that set the tone for the rest of the game. Beverley responded with a try after a weaving run from Ethan Rowbotham and then last season’s top scorer William Wallis got the second to put the braves 2-1 up.

Sutton Trust were not going to give up easily and they scored three tries to Beverley’s one to take a 4-3 lead, the Braves try from Wallis. Although defensively both sides were weak at times, special mention must go to those who did work hard in the middle, for Beverley this was Tom Newton, Oliver Loney and Lewis Egan. Rowbotham and Wallis both scored further tries to complete their hat-tricks by half-time and with a further Sutton try it was 6 all at the break.

The Braves challenge was to tighten up in defence in the second half and there was an improvement although three further tries were conceded. Inevitably Wallis was the first to score but a cheeky score on the last tackle from acting half-back got Egan on the scoresheet.

Good ground was made up field by Matthew Hutchinson, Thomas Cohen and Ryan Deane, whilst Tom Marr went close to scoring after a cross field run. Oli Gresswell and Will Sandford got stuck in after coming on as interchanges and Marcus Walker played a sound role at full-back with several last ditch, copy book tackles helping to shore up the Braves defence. Two further tries from Wallis and a second on the stroke of full-time for Egan secured the victory.

Wallis in attack and Walker in defence were the joint men of the matches.

It was a mixed bag for Beverley Braves under 8s when they took on Lambwath Sutton Trust and then Cottingham Tigers on Tuesday night at Hill Top.

In the first game the Braves only had a single try to celebrate from top scorer William Cohen. Despite all the lads putting in a huge effort they went down 3 tries to 1.

The boys fared much better against the Tigers drawing the match 3 tries apiece with pocket battleship Jacob Parkinson the star of the show scoring one and also putting in some bone crunching tackles in defence.

Alex Nuttall powered over for his first of the year, with nippy Will Cohen wrapping things up.

Charlie Barker pushed top tackler Ellis Gaden all the way in defence with Brian Usher, Shamus Blades and debutant Jude Kilgannon also worthy of praise.
