Schools Get Green Fingered For Beverley In Bloom

Beverley’s schoolchildren are ready to get their hands dirty to take part in this year’s Beverley in Bloom.

Beverley In Bloom Supporters, the volunteers who are behind the event in conjunction with Beverley Town Council, have encouraged schools and groups in the area to do their part to make Beverley look beautiful this year.

Each school will hopefully receive 15 bags of compost from Focus DIY, and will be offered plants at a reduced rate from Northfield Plants.

Swinemoor Primary School is expected to be the first school to take delivery of the plants and compost.
In their latest news letter, the Beverley In Bloom Supporters reveal the progress made in 2011 and also ask for volunteers to clean and replant hanging baskets and containers.

It reads: “Letters have been sent to shops in the town regarding hanging baskets and we are awaiting their responses, although 16 have signed up so far.

“Worklink will be supplying plants for these this year and hopefully for other areas next year

“A group is taking on an area in George Street car park and the railway station is expected to have their usual hanging baskets, although they need to replace their brackets for safety reasons first.

“Ten planters for the Minster have already been planted up and the next thing that needs to be done is the washing of 26 barrier containers which needs to be done quite soon.

“There are existing barrels and containers around the town containing bulbs that need to be removed for storage. We need volunteers for thisand plan to do this on Sunday 22 May at 11am.

“We intend to start at the 10 half barrels at the railway station, then on to barrels at the junction of New Walkergate and Railway Street (2 stacks, 3 barrels, 1 on top) and one opposite, followed by three barrel stacks in Wednesday Market and four barrels outside the Treasury House.

We expect that replanting will be in the second week of June.  Further details are available from  Margaret on 01482 867094 or Sue on 01482 864215 or  Chris on 01482 860714 if you would like to help out with either the bulb removal, replanting or both.

“If there are any groups such as a playgroup who would like to have a container with some compost and plants we are looking into whether this can be arranged, depending on what is available.

“Don’t forget that if you are intending to do any guerrilla gardening to let the council know so that it can be mapped and is not destroyed when they do their weed killing rounds.

“Please let us know if you would like to be involved in any of these things or have any suggestions by ringing either one of the numbers above or the Town Council on 01482 874096.”
