Members of a Beverley church have organised a fund-raising weekend to help young Christians undertake a potentially life-changing trip to India.
Beverley Community Church, based on Saturday Market, have forged strong links over the years with the Kings Temple Church in Hyderabad and are sending eight young people and two leaders to India in August.
The cost of the trip is £900 and to help with the expenses a series of events have been organised for the weekend of Friday 1 July to Sunday 3 July.
On the Friday dance group ELEVATE will peform at Keldmarsh School Hall from 7.30pm to 9.30pm. Tickets cost £5 and proceeds will be split between the dance group and the BCC trip to India fund.
A car boot sale is planned for the Saturday morning at Keldmarsh School. Pitches are available on a first come, first served basis for a donation. It runs from 10am – 3pm, although stall holders must arrive between 9am and 10am to set up their pitch.
Two events are planned for the Sunday. From 10.30am at Keldmarsh School there will be a youth service featuring music, drama, dance and information on the trip to India. And the weekend winds up with a curry evening at Murchi restaurant, featuring music from Frisky Biscuit. This costs £15.
Youth worker Ali Crompton explained why the trip to India is so worthwhile.
He said: “We’ve had links with the Kings Temple Church in Hyderabad for about six years now and have previously taken a youth team across there.
“The trip will consist of eight young people and two leaders who will be performing music, drama, dance and sharing their own life stories with people in Hyderabad and also out in the slum areas of the city.
“The cost per person is £900 so we’re trying to subsidise this as much as possible.
“This trip will not only have an impact on the people we come across but will definitely change the young people going. I’ve seen first-hand trips like this giving young people a greater sense of self worth, confidence and purpose.”
