Melsa Consort Concert In Aid Of Macmillan Cancer Support

The Melsa Consort will be performing in concert at St Mary’s Church, Beverley, on Saturday 11 June.

Under conductor David Wigley and with Colin Wright on the organ, the choir are performing for charity, as is customary. This time the concert is in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support.

Starting at 7.30pm, tickets cost £6, including refreshments. They can be bought on the door or at Beverley Tourist Information, Butcher Row.

The Melsa Consort was formed in the 1970s when a group of friends started meeting informally to enjoy singing together.

Over the years – and in the spirit of Beverley’s rich history of singing – the Melsa Consort have evolved into a popular choir singing in the region’s churches and country houses.

The emphasis is always upon pure enjoyment for the choir members, invariably with the advantage that concerts are given principally to raise money for charity.

The choir has in its repertoire major works such as Bach’s “Magnificat,” Domenico Scarlatti’s “Stabat Mater,” Vivaldi’s “Gloria”, Haydn’s “St. Nicholas Mass”, Palestrina’s “Missa Papae Marcelli” and Herbert Howell’s “Requiem”. Some of these are performed with the Melsa Chamber Orchestra.

The Melsa Consort has had a long-standing link with St. Mary’s Church, Beverley. For many years the choir has presented a concert of Christmas music and carols in the church  prior to the Christmas festival.
