Budding Allotment Enthusiasts To Be Cultivated At Allotments Open Day

Beverley Town Council in association with the National Gardens Scheme (NGS) is holding an Open Allotments Day on Sunday 29th July from 12 noon until 4pm on the Queensgate site.

The event, which is included in the NGS ‘Yellow Book’, is open to local residents, visitors and anyone with an interest in allotments and growing their own produce.

Admission is £2.50, with free entrance for children and Queensgate allotment holders. Free car parking will be provided nearby at Beverley Grammar School.

In a bid to encourage more people to get involved in planting, growing and eating locally produced food, allotment champions will be on hand to offer advice and guidance.

Weather permitting, there will also be a mobile kitchen at the site, with a chef cooking dishes with produce grown on the allotments and other locally grown and reared produce. Other attractions at the event include cream teas, a raffle for the Mayor of Beverley’s Diamond Jubilee charities and a gardening book stall hosted by Beverley Heart Town supporting the British Heart Foundation.

Helen Watson, Beverley Town Council Clerk said:

“The Open Day is part of Beverley Town Council’s ‘Field to Table’ project, which is funded by the Big Lottery Fund’s Local Food scheme, and promotes the initiative of making local food accessible and affordable.”

“It is a great chance for people of any age to come and find out how they can grow their own food and enjoy the many benefits of having an allotment.”
