Three East Riding salons have won the top UK award for excellent health and safety standards.
Tim’s Hairdressing in Beverley, Joanne Mahoney in Howden and Totally Faces in Kirkella became the overall UK winners in the Habia (Hair and Beauty Industry Authority) barbering, hairdressing and beauty categories respectively at Salon International in London.
The salons were all put forward by East Riding of Yorkshire Council, which recognised their particularly high standards as they took part in the council’s own health and safety award scheme for the East Riding – run to encourage and promote high standards of health and safety within the hair and beauty industry.
Councillor Jane Evison, portfolio holder for cultural services, housing and public protection said: “I am absolutely delighted for the three national winners from the East Riding. This awards process is an opportunity for the council to work in partnership with these businesses and recognise their good work.
“I would like to congratulate not only these three salons, but all of those taking part in the council’s awards scheme locally, who are working to protect their staff and customers.”
As well as three East Riding salons being named the best for health and safety in the UK, 202 salons throughout the East Riding have also gained the local award standard.
Paul Abbott, the council’s acting head of housing and public protection, said: “To achieve the local award a salon has had the confidence to sign up to receive advice and spot checks from council inspectors.
“The award publicly demonstrates that a salon is clean and safe, with staff implementing recognised best practice to help prevent customers and employees from suffering adverse reactions. ”
Alan Goldsbro, chief executive of Habia, said: “The Health and Safety Award scheme is run in partnership with local authorities throughout the UK, to recognise standards of excellence.
“Nominees that have gone the extra mile are then put forward for the National Habia awards. It is a remarkable achievement for each salon to be a UK winner and for the local area as a whole, demonstrating business commitment to salon and public safety in the hair and beauty sectors”.
