The latest café case display, created by the Wilderspin National School in Barton-on-Humber, has now opened at the Treasure House in Beverley and focuses on Samuel Wilderspin (1791-1866), ‘the forgotten pioneer of infant education.’
Wilderspin effectively founded the infant school system in this country and unusually for his time, he believed that happy pupils would learn better, so his system had a strong emphasis on ‘learning by play’.
This was much in contrast to the generally strict discipline seen in most Victorian schools and Wilderspin’s views were not widely accepted at the time.
Following a restoration programme, Wilderspin National School re-opened as a Museum and Visitor Centre in 2009.
