Beavers U12s Enjoy 'Pleasing Start' To New Season

Beverley RUFC Under 12s started their first competitive matches of the season away at Driffield with mixed fortunes.

Fielding 5 new players in Daniel Brians, Jude Cook, Adam Skeats, Jack Parsons and Jonathan Screeves, three of which had never played a competitive match it was always going to take a bit of time to settle in.

The first match against Driffield was a tale of two halves, in the first-half Driffield were dominant from the kick off, and the Beverley players struggled to bring their game to the pitch and conceded 3 tries, in the second half Beverley started to compete.

They became dominant in the scrums and won a good ball, the forwards committed to rucks and mauls and Ben Wilkinson, this years team Captain, lead the team from the front supported well by Lazenby and Crockett in the front row and a back row of Lawley, Dixon and Coughlin.

With some good work being created in the back line with Foster and Barnard linking well. Driffield managed though to squeeze over for a final try in the second half despite some heroic tackling.

The second match pitched Beverley up against Scarborough who were thankfull for Beverley, who lent them three players in Ben Ashley, Screeves and Cook, who all played well and with determination against their own teammates.

This time Beverley started with a point to prove following the disappointing start to the first game, the forwards dominated early possession and the backs continued to utilise the ball well. Strong running by Brians, Gunn and Hubbard and good support lead to Barnard weaving through a number of defenders to dive over for the teams first try of the season.

The second half was even more impressive. Beverley were fully awake now and hungry for more points. These duly came with Captain Wilkinson cutting through the defence to score a try under the posts, the next followed soon after, Dixon again cut through defenders as he has become accustomed to dive over the line, the final try was the finest of the day.

With Jasper Laws working hard on the wing and retaining good ball and the, forwards clearing the rucks allowed Crockett to quickly link up with Barnard, who looped a perfect pass to the pacey supporting run of Skeats who beat two defenders to cross over for his first try for his club on his debut.

All round an improving performance throughout the matches, and a pleasing start to the season.

Player of the week went to Adam Skeats for a strong debut and a fine try.
