A song celebrating Hull’s culture, history and talent is being released with the help of hundreds of schoolchildren and a few famous faces.

The project, Song for Hull, has brought together talented young singers from across the city to perform with stars Jonathan Ansell, The Garnett Family and rapper NB on the record marking Hull’s historic year as City of Culture.

New Timepiece Sculpture Moves Into Queens Gardens

The installation of Hull’s newest bespoke sculpture Solar Gate has begun. The 10 metre tall stainless steel structure was brought in to the city centre yesterday evening for the start of an installation process that will take a team of specialists a number of weeks to complete.

A flat-bed lorry with police escort and two cranes were used to bring the sculpture into the gardens and manoeuvre it into place. Now secure, work can begin to bring the piece of art to life.

Following the success of the Extraordinary Orchard Park Parade last Saturday – which saw over 1,000 people take to the estate to witness a From Air Land and Sea, Tales of the Nautical North themed procession – St Stephens is bringing a flavour of the parade to the city centre this Saturday.

The Extraordinary Orchard Park Parade was funded by Hull UK City of Culture 2017’s Creative Communities Programme, which is being delivered in partnership with the Big Lottery Fund. Now St Stephens, one of Hull UK City of Culture 2017’s Business Club Partners, has provided additional funding to showcase the hard work of Orchard Park residents further.

Graham Stuart MP has received a welcome boost to his campaign for the EU to scrap its new regulation which prohibits the Holderness onshore fishermen from landing Sea Bass.

Graham met onshore fisherman Shaun Wingham and his wife Penny in Withernsea recently to hear about the impact of the new EU regulation which prohibits them from landing Sea Bass. Shaun and his colleagues fish using a net that is stretched out along the beach at low tide, allowing the catch to be brought in when the tide retreats again. Sea Bass is the most valuable part of their haul.

Beverley and Holderness MP Graham Stuart has condemned a new EU Regulation that threatens the livelihoods of Holderness coast beach fishermen and has written to the Fisheries Minister, George Eustice, to ask him to pursue an exemption for Holderness.

The Regulation includes a total ban on targeted sea bass fishing from the shore, jeopardising the future of men like Shaun Wingham, who fishes near Withernsea using the centuries-old practice of onshore fishing, whereby a net is stretched out along the shoreline at low tide and the catch is brought in when it retreats again. Sea bass is the most valuable part of their haul.
