Trading Standards Raid Businesses In East Yorkshire And Confiscate Illegal Tobacco

Officers from the East Riding of Yorkshire Council Trading Standards Service raided three businesses, on 29 July 2024, for selling illicit tobacco and vapes.

Trading Standards Officers raided shops in Beverley, Hornsea, and Driffield. They found over 10,000 illicit cigarettes, six kilograms of hand rolled tobacco (HRT) and a substantial number of illegal vapes. Officers responded to complaints to Trading Standards about the sale of illicit tobacco at these premises.

Local NHS Warns People Not To Fall Victim To Health-Related Scams

Criminals are continuing to use the COVID-19 pandemic to scam the public and organisations. They are targeting people looking to buy medical supplies online, sending emails offering fake medical support and scamming people who may be vulnerable or increasingly isolated at home.

Reports from the public have included online shopping scams where people have ordered protective face masks, hand sanitiser, and other products, which have never arrived and a number of cases have been identified where fake testing kits have been offered for sale.

Police are urging people not to fall for a scam where a fraudster pretends to be from HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) before trying to trick vulnerable victims into paying bogus debts and taxes using iTunes gift cards.

The warning comes after an elderly man from Kirk Ella received a phone call telling him he owed a sum of money to HMRC and faced arrest unless he bought £500 worth of iTunes vouchers and told the scammer the codes over the phone.
