My mother Jane Yerbury Sweeney, who was born on 7th. January 1920 and died on 1st. June 2018 at Newbegin House in Beverley, was an extraordinary woman. Brought up in Kensington and Sussex, she was educated at home, mostly by herself. She read widely, but obtained no formal qualifications.
Her mother had been expelled from boarding school while her parents were living abroad, and her father, although he eventually qualified and became an eminent doctor with a successful practice in Kensington, had hated school, so the couple decided to keep Jane and her younger siblings at home.
Newbegin House, Beverley’s only five star B&B, has been included in the Good Hotel Guide 2018 and, for the third year running, has won an “Editor’s Choice” award.
In 2015, Newbegin House received a “best newcomer” award. This was followed by a “Best Value” award in 2016 and now by a “Best B&B” award in 2017.

Paddy…

Local retired vet Paddy Sweeney served a summons on Chisolms the Bookmakers over a dispute involving a counterfeit twenty pound note, and won. Paddy claimed he received the counterfeit note from them, and was only made aware of it when he tried to use it in another store. Paddy Sweeney said “I got a letter from the bookmaker saying that the matter was closed and that I was not going…
Yesterday evening what I set out to cover never materialised though I did meet a local man called Paddy Sweeney on Toll Gavel. Paddy is a retired vet and has great dog called Charlie. He has been in Beverley for a around 3 years now and said his dog gets a lot of attention. He asked if I would put the pictures on the web site for him.
