Beverley ARLFC has progressed to the next round of the cup. They beat Glasson Rangers 36-26 in the howling Cumbrian winds.
A long road trip was made even more difficult as a result of the match being moved coupled with the stormy conditions.
Beverley ARLFC will make the long trip to Glasson Rangers, Maryport this Saturday for their BARLA National Cup second round tie.
The BARLA National Cup is very much part of Head Coach Tony Spence’s pre-season preparations which have been very much a case of so far so good.
The Blue and Golds snatched the spoils with a Sam Coleman try just 15 minutes from the end of this quality pre-season friendly, played at a breakneck pace with both sides making light of the blustery conditions.
In this game with unlimited substitutions, Tony Spence gave workouts to 21 players and will take many positives especially the standard of defending close to the line.
The draw has been made for the 2020 BARLA National Open Cup with the Blue & Golds securing a bye.
This year the competition has attracted an entry of 25 sides. 18 teams will contest the first round on 18 January with 7 sides receiving a bye to the second round on 15 February.
The Blue and Golds will open up their 2020 NCL Division 2 campaign on March 7th with a home fixture against newly-promoted Woolston Rovers at the Leisure Centre.
The match is one of 3 home fixtures in March combined with a tough away trip to Wigan St Judes who only narrowly missed promotion to Division 1 last season.
The Blue and Golds will report back for pre-season training on 10 December.
New Head Coach Tony Spence held a recent meeting of his playing staff to establish a few goals and objectives for 2020.
The Blue and Golds have just held their end of season awards for 2019. Outgoing Head Coach Scott Taylor shared his views on the season.
Reflecting on what has been a difficult year for the club on the pitch, Taylor still remained upbeat.
This was a much changed Blue and Golds line-up that travelled to Bradford and there were few complaints from the coaching staff about the efforts.
Tony Spence took control of the side for the match that saw Beverley 33-18 by the West Yorkshire side. Spence said tactical awareness was an issue while he did praise his player’s efforts.
A Lewis Poskitt drop-goal in the 80th minute separated the two sides in this tense arm-wrestle.
Even then Beverley had to endure an agonising 6 minutes of stoppage time in which the visitors hit back with a converted try which thankfully was the cue for the full-time whistle to be sounded.
Beverley ARLFC will embark upon the first of this season’s 2 trips to Cumbria this Saturday.
Beverley will take the long trip north as they take on bottom of the table Askam at Fallowfield Park.
Beverley ARLC have been in full training for the past month. The first game of the season at York Acorn in the first round of the Challenge Cup on the weekend of the 26 and 27 January is drawing closer.
The club also expects to confirm a couple of friendlies in the month of February.
Pat Howdle has stepped down as Director of Rugby at Beverley ARLC bringing the end to a four-year spell with the club.
News of his departure was issued by the club who expressed their most sincere thanks. Howdle took charge at the club in the summer of 2014. During that time the club has developed rapidly and has even played live on TV.
Another trophy came Beverley Town Cricket Club’s way last Saturday when the 2nd XI won York Senior League Division One.
Although the weather prevented any play in two of the club’s Saturday games and the most vital, the 2nd XI fixture, was also abandoned before completion, news of cancellations and abandonments throughout the league meant the 2nds kept top place in Division one and will be promoted to the York Senior League Premier Division.
A busy Bank Holiday weekend for Beverley Town Cricket Club saw the 1st XI take 57 points from a possible 60 giving themselves a real chance of promotion.
The 2nd XI lost one game and picked up 27 points from their second to slip out of and back in to the promotion places; the 3rds won and then lost in two very tight finishes; and the 4ths rounded off their unbeaten season off in in style with a comfortable win.
There was a stark contrast between last Saturday and Sunday for Beverley Town Cricket Club.
Saturday saw a win for the 3rd XI and three winning draws while Sunday brought Hunters Cup final defeat for the 1st XI and a second loss of the season for the 5th XI.
Beverley Town Cricket Club 1st and 2nd XIs produced excellent performances last Saturday to maintain their good runs.
The 4th XI had an easy win to move closer to honours. The 3rds lost a tight game and the 5ths were unfortunate to have their game cancelled due to a rare wet day on Sunday.
Once again Beverley Town Cricket Club had three wins last weekend with the 1st, 2nd and 4th XIs all recording impressive wins, losing a total of only ten wickets in the process.
Beverley record wins against Malton & Old Malton, Sewerby and Gilberdyke on what proved to be a very successful day for the club.
A partnership of 129 between Tony Spence (56) and Olly Grantham (76) set Beverley Town Cricket Club on the way to a 114 runs victory over strugglers Sewerby at the Norwood Recreation Ground.
Beverley scored a total of 272-4 also included 33 from Rob Fish whilst Tom Norton (49no) just missed out on a half-century.
